This festival celebrates the work of the deity Aso-Daimyojin, who opened up the Aso territory and planted the seed for fertile farmland in the Aso region. The rite celebrates the year’s harvest. During feudal times, it was the only event at which Lord Hosokawa’s retainers would be in attendance. Since the Meiji period, the festival has been treated as a core yearly rite for Aso Shrine. Seeing the procession slowly wind its way through the shimmering green fields of Aso in midsummer is a memorable sight not soon to be forgotten.

Furano (富良野市 Furano-shi) is a city in the prefecture of Hokkaido located in the southern reaches of Kamikawa Subprefecture, under whose jurisdiction it resides. Well known throughout Japan as a tourism destination, it is famous for its lavender fields, the television drama Kita no Kuni kara and the Furano Ski Resort, which held the Snowboarding World Cup in recent years.

As of 2009, the city has an estimated population of 24,493 and a density of 40.8 persons per km² (106 persons per sq. mi.). The total area is 600.97 km2 (232.04 sq mi).

After the devastation of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku The Inoue Brothers travelled to the region to start a project with some of the affected local artisans. The result of this collaboration is their “Made in Tohoku” collection.

Throughout Tokyo and the other major cities, the natural environment has been sealed beneath the all-pervading concrete jungle, while in Kyoto and some of the more remote regions, the pristine landscape is valued above all else.
Whatever differences there in the various regions of Japan, the similarities are abundantly evident. Containing some of the most polite and hospitable people I have come across, along with the well structured style of living, Japan is a fantastic location to travel if you are interested in seeing some truly remarkable sights and experience a culture that is incomparably unique.

Sapporo : Snowboarding

Sapporo is known outside Japan for having hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, the first ever held in Asia, and for the city’s annual Yuki Matsuri, internationally referred to as the Sapporo Snow Festival, which draws more than 2 million tourists from around the world. The city is also home to Sapporo Brewery and the famous white chocolate biscuits called shiroi koibito (白い恋人, “white sweetheart”).

Travel Japan: Tour of Nippon.

For our Papersky Tour de Nippon in Shizuoka we feasted on the delicious food creations of Papersky Food Captain Arimoto Kurumi. We also enjoyed a live concert by Pepe California and watched the beautiful sunset from Temboo the host restaurant for the event. We also were honored to feature workshops from framebuilder KDM as well as leather craftmaster Ojaga design.

The next day we rode around the beautiful Kakegawa area of Shizuoka- enjoying views of Mt. Fuji, blooseming tea flowers and fields of tea as far as the eye could see. Another highlight was our ride over the worlds largest wooden bridge, Horai Bashi. We were warmly welcomed by tea farmers as well as green tea experts and enlightened with our visit to Kotomama Temple. We would also like to give a special shout out to Connect and Kamiyama Farms for their great help in making this event a wonderful one.
